We will be updating our opening date very soon. We look forward to seeing you on the ice!

Update: 12/14/18

Due to continuous unforseen issues with our equipment, we are unable to open the rink as projected on Dec. 14. We have all hands on deck and are doing everything we can to open asap. Once we have made the ice, we will update you all on a set open date.

Update on 12/5/18

The District has fixed the existing leak that was detected in the chiller pipe and proceeded to start operation of making ice.  Another leak was found so that has to be fixed before we can begin operation with our chiller.  As a result, the District has decided to rent a chiller so that we can get the rink open as soon as possible.  The rental chiller is coming from Los Angeles and is scheduled to be here on Thursday, December 6th.  It will take a couple of days to get it hooked up and operational.  It is our intent to start making ice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week with a projected opening on Friday, December 14th.  The District will continue to work on our chiller to get it operational.

Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District thanks you all for your patience during our early season equipment issues. Good times ahead as we look forward to a great winter season on the rink once we open.

The plan is to start the season off on Friday, December 14th with Public Skating from 3pm-7:45pm. During Public Skate time, there will be Ice Skating Lessons from 3:30pm-6:30 pm.

Update on 11/30/18

Truckee Donner Recreation & Park District started the process of making ice for the rink on November 4th with the intention of opening the rink two weeks earlier than normal.  We usually open the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is around the 25th of November.  When the systems were tested we found a refrigerant line had a leak in it.  There are 180 refrigerant lines so everyone had to be tested.  We located the leak and it has been fixed.  The next step in the process is to completely dehydrate the Freon lines, which takes about 3 days.  That process is currently happening.  After the dehydration is completed, we will put Freon back into the lines .  If everything works, it is our intent to start making ice on Sunday and Monday, December 2 & 3 and open on December 8th. This is currently the weather window for making ice next week.

If problems still occur, our back-up plan is to rent a portable “chiller” to make ice.  This is an expensive alternative, but we see the need to get the rink up and running as soon as possible.  If this plan needs to be enacted, we hope to be in operation by December 15.  We are currently contacting rental companies for chiller availability.

We will update you as new information becomes available.  Should you have any specific questions, you are welcome to call Steve Randall, General Manager at 530 550-4443 or by email at steve@tdrpd.org.  We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you, but we are dealing with a 35 year old chiller and unforeseen things can happen.  We are doing everything we can and our intention is to open as soon as possible.
