Staying Active Indoors
Winter is here…and with the weather becoming more unpredictable as we are in to the cold and wet months, many people in the Truckee community are left wondering what type of activities are available indoors. Luckily we have the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District programs and facilities available with state of the art facilities and equipment, along with great programs and sports to keep you and your kids active all winter long.
Find your lane this winter by jumping into the Truckee Community Pool's Lap Pool to work on your freestyle full body workout. With 10 lanes available at 25 yards in length, the lap pool offers a spacious environment to get your swimming in. For the more beginning/intermediate swimmer, we also have 2 lap lanes in our Rec Pool at a shorter distance for rehabs and those that are getting back into the swimming habit. If you like a group environment, then look into giving our aquatics programs a try. We have fantastic instructors that teach classes for Aqua HIIT, SUP Yoga, SUP Fitness, Deep H2O Aerobics and Water Yoga that allows you to pick the class(s) that work best for you. The pool has a expanded swim lesson program for all ages and abilities whether you are just beginning or working on specific skills to improve your swim stroke. The kids will love the Rec Pool that has water play features all over. The ever popular slide, current channel, volleyball and splash features make for a fun and playful pool with activities for all ages. The Pool is open year round and during the winter months it is a great location for activity and water play.
The cold and icy roads make for uncomfortable and dangerous conditions. Luckily we have the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District’s Indoor Track and Fitness Center as a solution rain or shine to allow for running all year long. Truckee’s Friendly Community Gym offers no crowds, state of the art equipment, low cost, and smiles for miles with staff at the ready if you are looking for assistance with your exercise. Want to shed a few pounds, build strength, or improve endurance for that 10K race? We can help. All staff provides instruction on equipment and can even recommend workout routines to help you reach your goals. (Workout logs and staff assistance are free of charge, and only subject to availability of staff members). The FITNESS CENTER offers the only Indoor Track in Truckee, Total-Body Circuit equipment, 8 cardio machines, free weights, and medicine balls for all levels of exercise. Located in the Community Rec Center, the climbing wall is now open for the Fall/Winter. Climbing is a fun and challenging sport that everyone can enjoy! It enhances your self-esteem, self-confidence, and patience. The Climbing Wall allows for all ages and abilities to learn techniques, and improve your mental and physical skills in a positive fun environment. The Auto Belays allow for climbers who don’t have a belayer, or don’t know how to belay, to still enjoy a climb on their own. Another climbing option in the Community Rec Center is the 12 ft. x 18 ft. Bouldering Wall where you can solve problems in levels VB – V6. The wall is open to the public weekly, Monday-Thursday evenings. Harness’ and shoes are available to rent at the Recreation Center. Have a rad party at the climbing wall on Saturdays or Sundays when you reserve at least 2 weeks in advance with TDRPD. Make sure to sign up your kids (grades 1-6) for the TDRPD climbing classes this fall and winter. Private Lessons and School Field Trips are also available for reservation.
